On the night of August 22nd, 1918, while bridging the River Lys, he and his men were subjected to an intense bombardment of high explosive and gas shells; notwithstanding having to leave the bridge several times and having to wear gas masks continuously he continued the work. It was entirely due to his coolness and determination that the bridge was completed. |
